Below are techniques for coding various types of data: 

 

Coding Documents or Text

The video below demonstrates 3 different ways to code text, along with the text instructions below.

Option 1: Longform Technique

  1. Highlight the passage/content you are interested in coding;
  2. Select the red "create excerpt icon" in the lower right corner;
  3. Double-click on a code from your codebook to apply it to the excerpt

Option 2: Two-Step Technique

  1. Highlight the passage/content you are interested in coding
  2. Double-click the code from your codebook

Option 3: One-step Technique using the Quick-Code Widget

  1. Highlight the passage/content you are interested in coding
  2. Click the spacebar on your keyboard to activate the Quick-Code widget
  3. From the Quick-Code window you can:
            • Search for a code and double-click the code to apply it to an excerpt
            • Create a new code and apply it to an excerpt all in one action

Tip: You can export your coded document to a Word document with your codes in comments boxes by going into the document, selecting the "export" icon in the upper right corner of the document, and ensure that "highlight excerpted regions" is selected before exporting.

Keyboard Shortcut: To quickly highlight text, 1. click where you want the excerpt to begin; 2. hold your shift key; 3. while holding shift, select the end of the excerpt. 

 

Coding Video and Audio

The process for creating and coding excerpts on audio or video streams is similar to the process for text, except you will see a different mechanism for selecting your excerpt parameters. 

To code video or audio:

  1. Move along the timeline by letting the stream play, moving the scroll bar along the bottom, or by clicking at a particular location on the timeline to jump to that time point
  2. The vertical purple bar is an indicator of where you are in the stream; the blue bars are your excerpt parameters
  3. Adjust the blue brackets to define the clip on the stream you wish to define as an excerpt
  4. Click the ‘Excerpt’ icon in the lower right corner of the viewer to create an excerpt
  5. Adjust the blue brackets on the timeline to mark the excerpt start and end points if needed (you can also adjust these after you have created an excerpt)
  6. Click the Create Excerpt button to create an excerpt 
  7. Double click or drag and drop the codes into the Selection Info panel to apply the code(s) to the excerpt

Note: You can re-enter excerpt editing mode by clicking the green bar that defines the excerpt. Click anywhere on the timeline to exit excerpt editing mode.

 

Keyboard Shortcuts

Keyboard shortcuts have been enabled for some of the most frequent audio and video excerpting activities:

  • Ctrl + P to toggle play/pause
  • Ctrl + Q to create an excerpt
  • Ctrl + + or Ctrl + – to move back and forward in the media player
  • Ctrl + Alt + +/- to move back and forward in larger increments
  • Ctrl + left or right arrow to move to the previous or next excerpt

 

Coding Images

To code images:

  1. Using your cursor, highlight a portion of the image; this will create an excerpt
  2. Double click on the code in your code tree to apply a code to the excerpt 

 

Coding PDFs

Coding PDFs is essentially the same as coding other documents, but with the added feature that you can code either as text or as an image. These options can be chosen from the Selection Mode.PDF documents also include a page selector, buttons for moving forward or back a page and a zoom bar.

Reminder: If you are more interested in analyzing the text within a PDF, rather than its aesthetic features, it is best to convert the PDF to a word document.

 

The page selector helps you jump to a page within the document. Type the page number you wish to see in the box and hit enter and you'll be taken directly to that page. Alternatively, you can move either one page forward or back with the arrow buttons.

 

The zoom bar helps adjust the size of your image or document. To use it, click on the slider. Adjust until the image is displayed at the desired size.

 

To Code Text in a PDF:

1. Make sure the selection mode is set to 'text'

2. Using your cursor, highlight a segment of text you wish to code

3. You can either use the Quick-Code Widget by hitting the space bar or simply double click on the code in your code tree to create the excerpt and apply the code

 

To Code Regions or Images in a PDF:

1. Make sure the selection mode is set to 'image'

2. Using your cursor, highlight a portion of the image you wish to code.

3. You can then either use the Quick-Code Widget by hitting the space bar or simply double click on the code in your code tree to create the excerpt and apply the code
