Codes Workspace Overview

The Codes Workspace provides access to your codebook and key code-based data visualizations.

Codebook View

The Codebook view is a great place to create, organize, and manage codes within your project. You can also select the “Excerpt Count” number associated with the code to view all coded data with that specific code applied.

The new design in Dedoose 10 also includes enhanced features outlined below. You can still adjust code settings and preferences via the Code Panel while you are analyzing your data as well.

Show/Hide Data Columns

You can control what metadata pertaining to your codes is presented to you by selecting the “Columns” button. You can choose from Code Description, Code Creator, Create Date, Code Weight, Memos, and Excerpts.

The ‘view code creator’ feature is new in Dedoose 10 and thus code creators will only be seen for codes created after you update to Dedoose 10.

Common Code Actions

Create and Add New Codes

  • Import codes via an Excel spreadsheet: Click on the arrow pointing down button in the upper right corner
  • Add new Parent/Root code: Select the “Add Code” button in the bottom left corner, or the addition icon in the upper right corner
  • Add new Child/Sub code: Select the checkbox next to the code where you would like to nest a child/sub code underneath. Once you do so, the “Add Child Code” button appears in the lower right corner.
  • Convert existing code into a child/sub code: You can click, drag, and drop a code onto another to ‘reparent’ the code and thus make it a subcode. You can also select the existing code to bring up the Edit Code window where you will see the “Reparent” button.

Revise or Edit Code

Click on a code in your Codebook to pull up the Edit Code window. You can revise your code description, enable/disable code weighting, delete, merge, or reparent the code. Several other options exist depending on your code type. Options are outlined below:

Mass Merge Codes

Merge 2 or more codes by selecting the checkbox next to each one and selecting the “Merge” button in the bottom right corner. After doing so, you will be presented with the choice to choose a Primary Code that will remain in your codebook, and the other codes will be listed as Secondary and will be merged into the Primary.

Auto-Upcode

The Auto-Upcode setting is located on the upper right corner of the codebook. If you activate the Auto-Upcode feature, Dedoose will provide a warning about how the setting may impact the project. If you decide to proceed, while coding you will see a warning message on the top of your codebook that Auto-Upcode is activated.

Upcode Wizard (Retroactive Upcode)

The "Upcode Wizard" in the bottom left corner activates the Retroactive Upcode feature. Read more about the implications of that feature here.

Code Charts via the Codes Workspace

The Codes Workspace includes quick access to key code-based charts. Select the “Code Charts” button to navigate to the chart options and select one to view along the top of the screen. Note that these charts are some of the most commonly used, but more data visualizations are located in the Analyze Workspace.
