Backing up and exporting your projects

Your projects are saved in the cloud. It can be useful useful to export data in batches for writing your findings, saving a local copy of your project and coded data, or when trying out new functions, or simply for extra reassurance.

Below are some suggestions:

  • You can export projects via the Dedoose Export project function (in the Home workspace) and it can be reimported into Dedoose at any time to replicate the project.
  • You can create a copy of your project.
  • Always keep a copy of the original media file you have imported on your local machine.
  • To access files in a format that is readable outside Dedoose, you can export different parts of your projects from the Dedoose Home workspace as explained below.

Exporting Data from the Home Workspace

The Export function allows you to export Codes, Descriptors, Media, Excerpts, Memos and Projects.

1. Codes can be exported (option to be chosen from drop down box):

  • In a spreadsheet (Excel, CSV, QDC) which will include how codes fit in the code tree, their title, description, and information on code weights. This can be useful to re-import a code tree in another project.
  • As text (Word, Text only). This will generate a document organized by codes including the code title, its description, information on weights, excerpts for each code, the media they were in and their position in that media, as well as excerpts for each code if the box ‘Include Code Excerpts’ was selected.

2. Descriptors can be exported in a spreadsheet. This is not only useful to have a record of the descriptors outside Dedoose, but can also be used to serve as starting point to update a descriptor set.

 3. Media are exported as a spreadsheet and will include all information about each media (length,  when and by whom added, number of excerpts, descriptors and numbers for each code). Individual coded media be be exported from an open document

4. Excerpts can be exported in various formats. The export Excerpts function open a window from where choices about what to include and how the have excerpts exported.

5. Memos can be exported as text documents and can include any linked excerpts, codes, media, descriptors by selecting the relevant box at the bottom of the window.

6. Projects can be exported. Exported project can be re-imported in Dedoose, or in similar software (export as QDAS Project).
