During Step 3, input your desired search term(s) and choose which code you want Dedoose to apply to the excerpts.

Select Search Term(s)

You can input a maximum of ten terms and can instruct Dedoose to limit your search to the ‘exact match’ of the specified term(s) and/or ‘include synonyms’ to have Dedoose suggest synonyms based on the term you provided.

You can also input phrases, but Dedoose will only return exact matches for that phrase.

Choose Code Application

After inputting your search term(s), choose which code you would like applied to the excerpts. You can choose from your existing codebook via the dropdown or Create a New Code link. We highly recommend creating a designated code for auto-coding purposes that can be easily found and manipulated afterwards (e.g, AC: Museum).

Creating a designated code for each Auto-Code workflow helps you easily isolate excerpts that have been coded via your codebook or excerpts workspace. This method also allows you to merge your Auto-Coding results with any existing codes you/your team has created after review.

Select the “Next: Review Auto-Code Candidates” button to initiate the search.

Submit Search

Once initiated, you will be presented with a status message and an overview of your settings selections. When complete, select the “Next: Review Auto-Code Candidates” button again to proceed with reviewing the candidate excerpts.
