The Text Analytics toolset includes two charts: Word Frequency and Word x Descriptor. These charts calculate the top 40 most frequently used words in your dataset and display them to you in bar or pie chart format, as well as by a descriptor field of your choice.
These charts calculate and present the top 40 most frequently used words in your dataset in bar or pie chart format, or as broken out by a descriptor field of your choice.
Using the Text Analytics features may help focus your attention on certain key words that are relevant to your analysis or spark new lines of inquiry in your study. The data presented in Text Analytics charts may also be good candidate search terms for use in the Auto-Code Wizard.
To access the Text Analytics Tools, select the "Text Analytics" button in the vertical navigation tab via the Codes, Media, or Excerpts Workspace.
Word Frequency Chart
The Word Frequency chart presents the 40 most frequently occurring words based on multi-step pooled calculation outlined at the end of this guide. The most frequently occurring words are listed on the left and the bar (or pie slice) represents the number of instances that word appears within your text-based dataset.
The right side of the chart contains the individual words and allows you to deselect words that you want to exclude from the chart.
Selecting a word on the chart:
You can select a bar/pie slice to view current excerpts in your dataset that contain that keyword. Note that this does not represent the total number of instances the word is in your dataset, but rather a shortcut to existing data that you have excerpted in your project that contains that word.
The “Matching Media” tab displays the total number of text-based documents where that word appears in the top 40 frequency list, regardless of any excerpting that has been completed.
Tip: You can select on one of these excerpts to open the excerpt-viewer and continue coding.
Word x Descriptor Chart
The Word x Descriptor Chart displays the frequency of the top 40 words disaggregated by a Descriptor Field of your choice. This results in a chart displaying the total number of descriptor profiles (e.g., participants or linked media items) that mentioned that word within each field.
In the example above, the word “coaches” was mentioned by 34 participants ages 36-55, while it was only mentioned 2 times for participants ages 18-35. Similar to the Word Frequency chart, you can select on a bar to view existing associated excerpts containing that word within the selected descriptor fields.
